Valkyria Chronicles is an anime based on the Sega game, set during the Second Europan War. It follows Welkin Gunther, a student and son of a war hero, Isara Gunther, his foster sister and mechanic, and Alicia Melchiott, a baker and townwatch member. Together in Squad 7 of the Gallian Militia, they resist the Empire's invasion to protect Gallia's resources and liberate their homeland.

Welkin Gunther is the main character in Valkyria Chronicles, leading Squad 7 in the Gallian militia during the Second Europan War. Son of General Belgen Gunther, he joins the militia after his hometown is invaded, along with his adopted sister Isara and friend Alicia Melchiott, who becomes his lover.

Alicia Melchiott, a 19-year-old Scout from Squad 7, dreams of becoming a baker in the future. She holds the position of second-in-command to Welkin Gunther and eventually becomes his romantic partner. Prior to joining the Militia, she served as a team captain in the Bruhl Town Watch and joined the cause after escaping the invasion of Bruhl.
